This 14-minute sound bite from the sixth Hamilton Economic Summit held in June 2014 features Rob MacIsaac, president and CEO of Hamilton Health Sciences, speaking on a number of topics, including ways existing businesses and start ups can assist in the transformation of healthcare in Hamilton and beyond.

This talk is framed in the broader context of efforts, led in part by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, to accelerate the growth of a local health sciences cluster anchored by Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s Health System.

MacIsaac identified several areas of opportunity for greater private sector involvement in the future of Hamilton Health Sciences, and community-based healthcare more generally, including the development of:

  • new forms of housing and amenities that enable seniors to remain in their homes as they age
  • new business models and technologies that help increase system-wide efficiencies in real time
  • new approaches/technologies that allow front line health workers to spend more time at the bedside delivering compassionate care

Said MacIsaac to the business leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators in the audience: “Help us devise, implement and run better systems that are going to allow us to make smarter decisions about how we run our hospitals.”
